About our Mah Jongg instructor: Dan Stanley began playing Mah Jongg in 2004 and has been teaching people to play ever since. A former professional opera singer, he usually taught his fellow cast members – male and female – to play to help pass the time in between appearances on stage. He is currently employed by the Department of Continuing Education at Bradley University and has taught a Mah Jongg class for the past two years through the Bradley chapter of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). An “accidental collector” of Mah Jongg sets, he has “accidentally” amassed a hoard of over two hundred sets over the last 24 years and appreciates the artistic merit of each and every one of them.
What is Mah Jongg: This is a traditional Chinese tile game played by four players using a set of 144 tiles. The goal is to be the first to complete a winning hand, usually made up of four sets and a pair, by drawing and discarding tiles in a turn-based format.
