SUMMARY:Five Points Speaker Series - Learn to Line Dance with RedBear Line Dance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and lively line dancing session with Jennifer Rawls from RedBear Line Dancing. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a first-timer\, come enjoy the rhythm and the fun! \n  \nAs always\, our Speaker Series events are free and open to the public\, so bring your friends with! It is always more fun to dance with a group\, we want to see how big of a group we can get dancing on February 24. \n  \n\nFebruary 24\, 1-3PM \nFive Points Washington\, Event Rooms C & D \n\n\n  \nOur Speaker Series is from 1-3PM on the fourth Monday of the month. Refreshments will be available and you do NOT have to be a Five Points member to come to our Speaker Series. \n  \nJoin our Five Points Senior Room page to hear more about our Speaker Series and other events happening in the Senior Room: https://www.facebook.com/groups/245412824880066 \n  \nLearn more about Jennifer Rawls and RedBear Line Dance: \nBeing Texas born & bred\, my love of two-stepping fed into a love of line dance. While I have been country dancing for many years\, I only took up instructing formally over a year ago. It became apparent if I didn’t\, there might not be any more dancers around. My mission is to get anyone interested in line dancing\, up and moving to country music! \n  \nWhile I introduce the latest line dances from around the country\, I emphasize learning a handful of core dances that can be done to many songs. I don’t want my dancers to have to memorize dozens of dances or wait for a specific song before they can dance. Thus\, even if we’re learning an ‘older’ dance\, we’re practicing to the latest country music. \n  \nI teach each line dance step-by-step\, wall-by-wall\, and when we’re all pretty confident\, put it to music. During practice\, we’ll dance to two songs at different tempos with steps called over the music. In the end\, if we’re facing the same way\, that’s great; if we’re having fun\, that’s a real win! \n  \nI am currently instructing a weekly improver level class for the Peoria Park District. I also teach a progressive build beginner class for PPD when enrollment requirements are met. \n  \nThrough my business\, RedBear Line Dance\, I have instructed weekly/bi weekly at Daddios (Bloomington)\, OZ’Z (Creve Coeur)\, and Hanna City Sportsman’s Club [HCSC]. Long term bookings in progress for 2025 include Haven on the Farm and HCSC. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \nQuestions? Contact Banquet Manager\, Paige Wise: paigew@fivepointswashington.org.

SUMMARY:Co-Ed Young Adult Leagues – Pickleball
DESCRIPTION:Introducing\, our first Co-Ed Young Adult Friday Night Leagues! Throughout the winter\, we will offer 4 different recreational leagues to get you and your friends up and active. These leagues are open to anyone 18-years and older. These co-ed leagues are a great way to meet some new friends and stay active during the winter. \n  \nPickleball League \nFebruary 7-28 from 5-7PM on Fridays \nRegister teams of 2 \n4 weeks of play \n$40/member team \n$60/non-member team \n**Registration opens on January 1 at the Front Desk \n**10 Teams Maximum for the League** \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n**If you can’t make it right at 5PM\, let us know when you sign-up. You will still have plenty of time to get all of your games in for the evening once you arrive.\n\n\n\nYour paddle will be added to the line-up as soon as you arrive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nMake sure to follow our Facebook event for more information about the league and to meet your new friends in the league: Facebook Page. \n  \n  \n\n\nAbout our Pickleball League \nEach Friday night\, you and your team will come in and see how many games of Pickleball you can play. Everyone will place their paddles in a bucket and the first set of teams will be drawn out of the bucket to play (6 teams). If your paddle isn’t drawn\, your team will wait until a court opens up. You will play a single game against each team. When playing your games\, if you win\, you get to stay on the court. If you lose\, you will head to the sidelines and wait for your next turn. This is a recreational league so wins and loses will not be kept track of. We are here to have fun! Obviously\, the more you win\, the more games you get to play. \n  \n\nWe will honor traditional scoring for Pickleball games. See below for more information about Pickleball rules. \n\n  \nHow to Play Pickleball \nPickleball is played on a badminton-sized court: 20’ x 44.’ The ball is served diagonally (starting with the right-hand service-square)\, and points can only be scored by the side that serves. \nPlayers on each side must let the ball bounce once before volleys are allowed\, and there is a seven-foot no-volley zone on each side of the net\, to prevent “spiking.” The server continues to serve\, alternating service courts\, until he or she faults. The first side scoring eleven points and leading by at least two points wins.   \n  \nCourt and Gear \nPickleball is traditionally played special Pickleball paddles\, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials. The ball used is similar to a wiffle ball\, but slightly smaller. The lower net and wiffle ball allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities\, while still allowing more competitive players to test their mettle. \n  \nThe Serve \nServes are to be made diagonally\, starting with the right-hand service-square and alternating each serve. The serve must clear the seven-foot non-volley-zone in front of the net and land in the diagonal service court. \n  \nServes should always be done underhand with the paddle below the waist\, and the server must keep one foot behind the back line when serving. The ball should be hit into the air without being bounced. The serving side will continue to serve until the there is a fault on the service\, at which point the service will be given to the opposing side. (However\, if the ball touches the net but still lands within the appropriate service court\, the serve may be taken over.) \n  \n\nThe serving team may decide who will serve first with a coin toss. The winner of the coin toss will have the option to choose whether or not to serve first. \n\n  \nVolleys \nTo volley means to hit a ball in the air without first letting it bounce. In Pickleball\, this can only be done when the player’s feet are behind the non-volley zone line (seven feet behind the net). \n  \nDouble-Bounce Rule \nEach team must play their first shot off of the bounce. That is\, the receiving team must let the serve bounce and the serving team must let the return of the serve bounce before playing it. Once these two bounces have occurred\, the ball can either be volleyed or played off the bounce. \n  \nFault \nA fault is committed when the ball: \n\nIs hit out of bounds\nDoes not clear the net\nIs volleyed from the non-volley zone\nIs volleyed before a bounce has occurred on each side\nDetermining Serving Team\n\n\n\n  \nQuestions about our Young Adult Leagues? Contact Fitness Manager\, Megan West: meganw@fivepointswashington.org.
